Apostle Island adventures in Lake Superior.
Last summer Mike and I got the opportunity to cruise in the Apostle Islands with Cruising World Magazine editor, Mark Pillsbury. This is a place that has been on my list for a long time. It was an awesome week. It's really fun to discover places in the U.S. that have such a unique character all their own. The caves on Sand Island and Devil's island really captured our attention. We were able to scoot through some of the caves and pop out of another opening on the dinghy. The sailing was pretty good, and a sailboat was definitely the way to go through these islands.
Some of us even got brave and jumped into the chilly Lake Superior water, about 55 degrees, but that might be optimistic. It was a little hard to resist the water, it was so clear and blue and refreshing looking.
The colors were amazing, almost like the red rocks in the Southwest. Poor Mark had to get up at dawn with me every morning to get to all the scenic spots. Secretly I think he enjoyed it!
This was very much an ideal, almost dream assignment. To be able to be a in a beautiful place shooting at the best times of the day and getting to explore a new place. It probably helped that it was on a boat. Maybe the next one will be by bike.

Hurray First Cover! The spring issue of Newport Life's home issue is sporting a Marianne Photography cover. I'm so excited about this. The shoot was definitely challenging. When the assignment came up I was picturing a bright sunny day that would give me some wonderful colors at the end of the day. Instead it was a hazy steamy August day with very little color. However, when the sun started to sink behind the hazy a few things seems to hold a nice glow. The twilight that night was wonderful and the Newport bridge looked beautiful across the bay.

March has also been a good month for giving the website a bit of a makeover. There is still lots of images that need to be swapped for newer ones, but for the most part, it's nice to be wearing new images.

New Zealand!
It really doesn't get any better than New Zealand. There is so much to do there that it's really overwhelming. Mike and I decided to do as much as we could without wearing ourselves thin. We started in Auckland for our recovery day from the big flight there. The next day we headed immediately to the Christ Church on the South Island. We stayed in a small town outside the city called Sumner.
After exploring Christchurch we headed up and over Arthur's Pass. This was a jaw dropping drive as we left very early and the clouds were lying low in the foothills leading up to the pass. We made our way back down the other side and headed down the west coast towards the Franz Joseph Glacier. The hike on the glacier was truly amazing and I think both of us have a new respect for glaciers and whats happening to them as global warming takes it's toll.
Heading back over the mountains we found what I think was our favorite place to stay. We stayed in a little tiny cabin (chalet style of course), the room was wood paneled and clean with just three beds scattered around little space. The bathrooms were in a seperate building, and dinner was in the main lodge. This holiday park pretty much made up what was called Makarora, and it was a perfect place to stop before heading on to Wanaka.
We hiked the Rob Roy trail near Wanaka and had a visit with a Kea bird at the end of the trail while checking out some amazing views of glaciers further up the mountians. Our next stop was Mt. Hood. That place was really truly amazing. Wait till I get those photos up.
We took the train/ferry combo up the coast from Christchurch and back to the North Island, then drove up to Tauranga to stay with some friends on a Kiwi fruit orchard. We managed to get one great beach day in there to rest ourselves up for the return to the States.
I can't wait to get the images up, they will tell a much better story than I can type.
Photos coming soon!
